This classic American comedy/drama is every bit as touching, warm, and witty today as when it debuted on Broadway in 1979. When Ethel and Norman Thayer return to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year, they are visited by their divorced daughter and her fiancé who then go off to Europe leaving his teenage son behind for the summer.
Norman is a near-80, retired professor with heart palpitations and failing memory, who retains his tart-tongued, observant eagerness for life. Ethel is ten years younger and the perfect foil for Norman, delighting in all the small things that have enriched their long life together. The teenage boy quickly becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple has longed for. As Norman revels in taking his ward fishing, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness in return. When the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll. In the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Though time is now against them, they realize their years together have been rich and full. Perhaps yet another summer on Golden Pond waits. The 1981 movie featuring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn received three Academy Awards. Our production will feature a SPECIAL CELEBRITY GUEST STAR to be announced soon! Plated lunch included before the matinee begins.
