Peanut Capital of the World!

In 1912, Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici opened the facilities of the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company in Suffolk, Virginia. He built on the widespread cultivation of peanuts and by 1941, Suffolk had been declared “The Peanut Capital of the World.” Soon after, an annual festival was created to celebrate this famous Virginia product! 2024 marks the 46th Anniversary of Suffolk’s Premier Festival. Our Festival visit on Friday includes BINGO… it’s free and prizes for all the winners! During your stay, shop and browse the many art and craft vendors.  Midday enjoy a delicious water-view lunch at Smithfield Station Waterfront Inn, Restaurant and Marina, located along the Pagan River, followed by a short drive into the quaint town of Smithfield. This afternoon visit the Isle of Wight Museum which includes a presentation on the rich history of ham and peanuts in this part of Virginia. The museum's most notable artifact is the world's oldest, edible cured ham. The 1902 pork product exemplifies the patented Smithfield curing process. Fascinating! Time permitting, browse the boutique shops in Smithfield before departing for home.
