Marking the75th Anniversary of the end of World War II and honoring the courage and sacrifice of the Greatest Generation, this year’s Virginia International Military Tattoo Show held at the Norfolk Scope Arena, offers an astounding display of inspirational military music, majestic massed pipes and drums, show-stopping drill team maneuvers, colorful and elegant dancers, and much more.  The 24th annual Tattoo features over 1,000 performers from eight countries and promises to be one of the most moving ever, as they commemorate, remember, and celebrate the men and women who changed the course of history, not only for the United States but for the world. The displays of stirring music, historic photos and video, tributes from military bands, and special appearances by veterans make this an event beyond comparison. Lunch is included en route at everyone’s favorite Wakefield, VArestaurant . . . the Virginia Diner.

From Dinosaurs to Da Vincinational museum of natural history

Celebrate the return of the Dinosaurs at the National Museum of Natural History on the National Mall. 

Having been closed for 5 years to undergo renovations, the new, 31,000-square-foot fossil hall invites you to explore the epic story of how Earth’s distant past is connected to the present.  This museum, administered by the Smithsonian Institution, is the most visited natural history museum in the world.

Opened in 1910, located on the National Mall, the museum’s collections contain over 126 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, and human cultural artifacts. The hardest decision with this portion of today is deciding in what part of the museum to spend your time.

This afternoon, view some of the world’s most important works of art in the renowned National Gallery of Art.   Its collection of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only paintings by Leonardo da Vinci on display in the US.

Entertaining narration is given by a historically attired Lighthouse keeper as you cruise close to these lighthouses.  The views are picturesque, and the cruising vessel is comfortable and climate controlled.

Once returning to the docks, in the heart of Annapolis, there is free time to explore all the unique shops or find a bench along the water, enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the boats sail by.  For those interested, walk a short distance to the US Naval Academy Visitor Center. Their Gift Shop is worth the visit!

The National Memorial Day Parade, held annually along Constitution Avenue in our nation’s capital, shares the story of American honor and sacrifice from across the generations.

The parade, commemorating its fifteenth year, is our nation’s largest Memorial Day event. It pays tribute to those who have served, are serving, and most importantly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while in service to our country. It draws on the tradition of Memorial Day parades, going back to the beginning of the holiday just after the Civil War, to create a family-friendly event aimed at calling attention to the true meaning of Memorial Day – honoring our fallen heroes. We have reserved seats for you for the parade!

The day will start at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, for time to explore and a chance to see their new 40-minute film entitled “We, the Marines” in their impressive, giant screen Medal of Honor Theatre.

A box lunch will be served en route to Washington with plenty of time to get seated for the afternoon parade.  Make this Memorial Day a memorable one!
