Captivating Cape Charles
Cape Charles, Virginia Tuesday – May 25, 2021

The town of Cape Charles sits near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Founded in 1884, the town was originally a planned community intended to support a new railroad and the Little Creek-Cape Charles Ferry. Today, with a population just topping 1,000, Cape Charles maintains its quaint, post-Victorian charm. Lifelong residence and retired Town Planner, Tom Bonadeo, will be with you during your visit, educating and entertaining you as you travel between destinations.
Highlights include the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel, lunch on the water at The Shanty, and Kiptopeke State Park, where you can see half-sunk and abandoned WWI and WWII Cargo Ships that were intentionally placed there in the late 1940’s as a breaker to protect a ferry terminal pier. Travel into the nearby Wildlife Refuge to learn how this area, during the World Wars, was a strategic defensive area, protecting possible German invasion into the Chesapeake Bay. See an actual 16-inch artillery gun that sits on the bunkers that are still in place. At the Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve, enjoy a walk out to the bay for scenic views and to see expansive sand dunes. Last but not least, there will be a riding tour of the Historic District with time to browse the shops before departing for home.

A Chesapeake Bay Escape
Tangier Island, Virginia Saturday – June 19, 2021

This tour is a long time favorite, but it fits our description of history, connection with the outdoors, and spectacular scenery. The year was 1608 and Captain John Smith, while sailing up the Chesapeake Bay, decided to drop anchor on a small island he named… Tangier! Over the years, Tangier Island has transformed from the hunting and fishing grounds of the Pocomoke Indians to the unique island it is today. Learn how the rich oyster and crab grounds surrounding the Island drew early settlers to Tangier many years ago and to this day, continues to draw fishermen.
Depart Richmond and travel to Reedville, Virginia, where you’ll board the Chesapeake Breeze for a 1 ½ hour cruise to Tangier Island. Small and largely unspoiled, the island’s fishing village remains the “Soft-shell Crab Capital” of the world. The people of Tangier, who speak with a lingering trace of Elizabethan accent, are warm, friendly, and proud of their heritage. Lunch is included upon arrival and is followed by plenty of time to explore. Stroll along the small roads and visit the unique gift shops or, for a small fee, hop aboard one of the local’s golf carts and take a tour around the island.
